The five-man defence looks like an excellent tactic to counter the 4-3-3. Italy did the same thing against (a much better) Spain in the opening game of the Euros and should have won by a few goals that time. It's impossibly boring to watch though and doesn't accomplish much against teams like Argentina.

He was awful most of the time too. Portugal were better on paper than at least two of the other teams they faced. You'd expect a player of that calibre to get them out of the group at least.

Maybe, but Pirlo is a 35 year old guy playing in front of the defence. He's not one of the five best strikers in the world in his prime. Bit much to expect him to step up and score a couple of winning goals, don't you think?
