Just skipped through this, I detest the Dutch, but begrudgingly admit that Argentina - Holland will be a better semi than Argentina - Costa Rica.

Unusual move that you dont see often that won his team the game. Yeah, i'd say that about makes him a genius mastermind. Couple it with his reputation and track record and I'm not really sure how he doesn't deserve the tag.

The Van Gaal appointment at United is already grinding my gears a bit.

He's been given £100m to spend, he's walking into an environment with massively lowered expectations and his every move is being treated as evidence of supreme wisdom. Going to be annoying if United don't have another dire season.

He subbed on a goalkeeper who is better at taking penalties right before the penalties were taken - risky only in the sense that he hadn't had any game time.
Obviously it's something that was planned beforehand, smart, practical but hardly genius.

He could be starting Krul in the first place, he's a pretty decent Premiership keeper after all. You dont think it's a bit odd to leave yourself with only 2 subs playing a massive game with extra time in the heat just so you can have some goalie from the dutch league on the pitch?

I hadn't thought about it that way I guess.
Cillessen is clealy his number one keeper though, deservedly so too I think, he's been solid every game.
Van Gaal said afterwards that he sent Krul on because he's taller and has a longer reach.

Only just got online since the games. Feel sorry for Costa Rica, really wanted them to win but guess the better team did win in the end. Never seen a team swap the keeper for a shootout before but you have to say it worked. Would have been pretty devastated to be Cillessen though. As a keeper you're not going to be the villain in a shootout and that's your rare chance to be the hero. But he celebrated more than anyone so must have been relieved not to be part of it, or presumably it had been a known plan all along so it was no shock to him when it happened.

Wasn't the best 90 minutes but what an extra time! Really loved Navas this tournament. Not seen him before but he's been wonderful.

Costa Rica should have had a peno when Joel was pushed down. Having said that, the Dutch were clearly better and deserved to go through.

Van Gaal subbing on Kruul sent a pretty clear message to the Costa Ricans I reckon! Never happened before afaik, and it was bound to get the Costa Rica players thinking. Kruul showed terrible sportsmanship ahead of each penalty, but the ref has to take a large portion of the blame there for letting him do that. Kudos to Kruul too; he dived to the right side on every penalty, and the final save was very impressive.

I think the Holland v Argentina game will be very interesting; the Dutch will look to counter, and the Argies will look to keep possession. I had the Argies to win it all ahead of the tournament, but Di Maria is a massive loss for them. The doped midget needs to step up, and Higuain looked a different player after he scored that goal.

It was a ballsy move, can't see Wenger for example taking off Chesney for Fabianski in a CL quarter final. Most managers wouldn't probably want to hurt the feeling or shatter the confidence of their 1st choice keeper but Van Gaal doesn't give a fuck. And it was not like Krul's record on penalties was particularly good.

Van Gaal is one of the best tactical brains the game has ever seen, really didn't want him to join the cunts.

Krul was 2/20 in saving penalties for Newcastle.
Van gaal said he put him in because he's much taller and has a better reach.
I'm sure it had an impact on the minds of the Costa Rica players as they probably thought he was some sort of penalty saving god.
It was good outside the box thinking, but genius is a wild exaggeration.
