Anyone who calls football soccer might as well not bother writing about it.

The thing is though Klaus the term soccer is not American in origin and it is much older than you might think.
The story goes that Charles Wreford-Brown the famous amateur of the Corinthians
was in his room at Oxford university in the 1890's and asked if hes was playing "rugger" (rugby football), no I'm playing "soccer" he replied, a play on the name of association football.

I'm not sure it does.
I remember a lot of people who were very knowledgeable on all things football refer to it as "soccer" just to distinguish it from Gaelic football, which was always referred to as football where I came from.

I find only people with a bit of disdain for it in relation to GAA call it soccer.

They are of a generation that wouldn't be aware thay they'd be scorned or ridiculed for calling it "soccer".
