Hope he isn't too much injured if he signs for us. He has never played 30 league games in a single season before, and that was BEFORE his ACL injury. Schneiderlin has averaged 34 league games a season the last six seasons. Basically never injured.

"Spanish website ABC.es are exclusively reporting on Wednesday that Jose Mourinho has got personally involved in trying to bring Sami Khedira to Chelsea.
Whilst most of the media seem to be promulgating the belief that World Cup winner Kherida is headed to Arsenal for 29 million euros, ABC have announced that Mourinho has picked up the phone to speak directly to the player about his future.
Mourinho is said to have close ties with the holding midfielder, having signed him for Real Madrid in 2010 from Stuttgart.
ABC also detail that the Special One has contacted Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to ‘make an effort’ to snare the player from under Arsenal’s noses."

I have absolutely no doubt that Mourinho would want him. Question is - does Sami want us more than he wants Jose?

Mourinho would probably sign Khedira just to stop us getting him.

I understand the desire for more physicality in midfield (and I'd like more too), but I also think that a lot of general weaknesses in the team appear most obviously in the central midfield area. How does Theo help us simply by being present on the field? He pushes defensive lines back and creates space for our midfielders. I want a new CM, but I don't think it's smart to make our big game problems about the 'DM' first and foremost. If we're going to play high fullbacks (and therefore not keep numbers behind the ball), we need to keep possession under pressure and pose a threat in behind to keep the defense honest. Our biggest problem IMO is giving away open counterattacks in big games. Khedira by himself doesn't change that. In fact, his less than stellar qualities as a passer could make it worse.

No wonder we were losing big in those games if both Sagna and Gibbs had just recently smoked pot or the like. I reject that claim though.

I am curious - who was the DM when we played a Petit and Vieira midfield? They seemed to cope just fine.

dont forget romford ray usually played on the right and put in a serious amount of defensive work. vieira, petit, and parlour were all intelligent two way players. we dont have that kind of personnel or formation anymore, so the comparison doesnt really bear up to scrutiny.

And a right back and a goalkeeper. And then we'd still have to promote one of the younger center backs to the main squad. We're terribly thin at the back and i'm very worried about it.

Sanchez, Khedira, Debuchy, and Ospina, would probably be it.

Wenger will chance it at CB again imo, unless he goes for some kid or an older player for peanuts. I wouldn't expect a particularly competent CB though.

Alexis is excellent defensively and works really hard, don't forget. As for formation, we pretty much play exactly the same, so the comparison is valid. If anything, Özil does more defending than Bergkamp did in that number 10 role.

an alternative view to this is that there is a limited market for good players, and in the past we have always left ourselves vulnerable to being outbid for players.

who are these players anyway that Mourinho has stockpiled to spite us?

It would be weaselly for Chelsea to gazump this now, but they might well do it. Not so bad, though, as we probably have one or more other targets to consider.

Find a piece of solid new info—backed up with a comment from an agent, fellow player, manager or club official—since Sunday and we'll include it.

All that seems clear so far is that we've made an approach to Madrid and his representatives.
