I think I've been deluding myself a little too. That team was a truly great team; quality all over, but Henry was the one that made us so special. We have had some very good players and even teams since, but we're never going to have another Henry - so we'll never be anything like that good again. Where on earth do you find a 50 game, 30 goal, 20 assist forward that does it season, after season, after season?

🙁 The idea that the Invincibles were really just a squad of about the calibre we have now, plus Henry, is almost plausible, and yeah it is a bit depressing.

I mean look at this, doesn't it make you want to cry?

As good as Campbell, Cole, Vieira, Pires were - you can't get another player that can do that. Those are the best players in the world he's doing that to. We'll never see another like him. And I have to stop thinking he's the standard bearer for what an Arsenal forward should be. He's not. He's probably the best all-round forward to have ever kicked a ball.

Yep, I look at that and think two things ... first, if he'd had Madrid or Barca built around him he would've been good for 40-50 goals in that league. Second, if we had a peak Henry right now we'd just about be league favourites.

If Henry had left us 3-4 years earlier and gone to a super club he would be widely considered as the best striker of his generation and probably have a pretty good shot at the crown. Only one I've seen who was as good was Ronaldo pre-injury. They both had absolutely everything in their locker.

Never mind, I think he's already regarded as a supreme talent by those that know the game (and I don't mean just gooners). Good enough for me.

Definitely. I don't think he's considered The Player outside of Arsenal and/or Premier League though. Not the same way van Basten or Ronaldo were at least. But that's his level.

It's a bit of an insult that both Michael Owen and Andriy Shevchenko won the golden ball but Henry never did. They were both exactly half as good as him.

From what I recall Shevchenko in Kiev and Italy was far better and more complete than Owen, but still far worse than Henry. Even in his best years Owen was just an unusually quick Robbie Fowler—which to be fair is pretty good.

Henry is definitely the standard bearer, and ought to be for the club. Only way to continue striving for the best, instead of signing Giroud and being content with life.

I kinda kidded myself that Sanchez was the Henry replacement, but you are right, that we would be lucky to get anyone as great as him again.

Shevchenko was better than Owen but he's easily the most overrated striker I've ever seen. He wasn't even the best player in his own team the year he won the ballon d'or. Sometimes the PR machine spins out of control for some reason. It happened with Wesley Sneijder too, and to some extent Didier Drogba.

The man had so much charisma.

Him and Ronaldinho were the two most watchable footballers of the past 10-15 years.

Why are ITV spending so much time convincing us that Wilshere is playing as a defensive midfielder? Surely Henderson will do that?

Hodgson confirms Wilshere will be playing the 'Pirlo role' at the base of the diamond. Interesting. If he nails this, maybe the Ramsey-Wilshere pairing can work. Let's see his defensive work today.

Hope it works. Wilshere can be such a fantastic deep lying midfielder if he can just work on his defensive game.

Tactics

He will be fine, it's probably the easiest position to play in midfield. Its difficulty level and importance (without the ball) is just hyped up beyond belief.

So England are using a diamond, hope Wenger is watching.....
