I like Smalling as a player actually. My opinion is that he needs a vocal, bossy player next to him though, which means I wouldn't be too comfortable seeing him next to Kos.
He can be a great CB, but not keen on him being our RB.
He's 25 this fall. He's probably ruined.

That's not old for a CB though. Koscielny had one season of top level football under his belt at that time.
It's not too old as such, but he's been heading in the wrong direction for the last couple of seasons and it doesn't look like he will turn it around anytime soon. Kos just got a late start and was working his way up. Smalling still doesn't know what type of player he is.
Don't think all the signs are here so I wouldn't worry
