That's exactly my point on your last paragraph, I'm not saying it's linked with quality, I'm saying there's all sorts of factors involved which mean that in reality, when guys like Ozil and Sanchez become available (or decide to explore their options) there isn't necessarily going to be a long list of big clubs in for them despite both being top drawer players.

It's an assumption that gets incorrectly made about players at other clubs too, lost count home many times I've read 'why would player x sign for us? 17 better clubs will be in for him'.

Your point is just half of the one I'm making in that paragraph; there isn't necessarily a long list of big clubs for every player available but it's pretty likely clubs would get active if there were any signs of some player wanting to move. I'm pretty sure not many clubs have contacted Messi in recent times but there are at least three or four clubs who'd contact Barcelona in a second if they got word of him being unsettled. Likewise Özil, not many if any better #10s around, why wouldn't there be a number of clubs trying to get him?

The point was whether or not City, Chelsea, United, PSG or Bayern would be interested - not whether clubs in general would be interested.
The reason that's the point is the discussion was prompted by the suggestion that our lack of ambitions or title winning potential would spur Özil to move to a club where his dream could be realised.

No, because the fact he could sell him a contract three years ago under certain circumstances doesn't mean he could do it now under different circumstances, obviously. If that was the case none of our players would ever leave once Wenger had signed them.

Spot on, this is also the reason why Cesc Nasri RVP and co never left us and won the league with us in the last couple years.

I'm not speculating anything, it's perfectly logical to suggest there will be a few clubs interested. I'm just saying it's not necessarily the case. Some may have other targets, same may not be able to match the sort of wages we can offer or afford the fee we'd demand. This is way it's rarely the case that these guys have their pick of clubs, a long list turns into a list of about 1-3 realistic options and that's before you consider what sort of club they want to move to.

I disagree Klaus, I'm not projecting, I'm reading the responses to my posts - maybe contempt was a tad strong, scorn is probably the better word.

As you say you don't think my opinion is particularly good or consistent, which is actually the first time that you've said it out straight as opposed to being sarky and snide in your responses.

I have no problem at all with people telling me they disagree, I fully expect people to disagree as I don't consider my thoughts as some kind of inaliable truth.

They are both on very reasonable wages and in terms of fees we have never been very hard to negotiate with. Also those steps come quite a while after the initial interest was made known naturally, which is what I'm talking about - there are many hurdles for all three parties to overcome to get a major transfer done but signalling interest isn't one of them.

The likes of Hulk, David Luiz or Sterling went for more in recent seasons. After we bought Özil Angel Di Maria was sold twice for higher fees, I think it's very unlikely that there wouldn't be any reasonable suitors for our best two players.
