I don't agree, for the same reason I don't agree that it should be up to the player to decide whether to play on in the event of a head injury. No one is ever going to say no when faced with a choice. Don't mistake the fact that nothing has happened yet for a guarantee that nothing will happen in the future.
If it had been the NHL, or even professional boxing, someone with a serious enough condition to fail so many medicals wouldn't have been allowed to compete as an athlete. Any doctor who would decide to give him the greenlight despite knowledge of the condition would open him- or herself up to malpractice suits.
