Wondered that myself after watching the Dortmund-Real game. Varane was getting rave reviews last season, really liked what I managed to catch of him too. Has he had a bad season this time round or is it just Ancelotti going with the more experienced (and truly bloody awful) Pepe?

Am I right in thinking that whilst Varane is young, he's a very good reader of the game and in that regard he's different from other young centrebacks that burst on the scene and look good largely because they can run and turn fast? He's looked smart and with good concentration to me in my limited viewings of him.

I'm not sure why Ancelotti keeps benching him. I've only seen Varane play for Real but he looks like a world star waiting to happen. Reads the game like a boss. He looks good the same way Koscielny does, if that makes any sense. Every once in a while someone pops onto the scene and starts dominating strikers not only physically but also technically. It must be so embarrassing to play against them and come up short.

He is a smarter defender than Kos too in the sense that he doesn't concede penalties the way Kos does.

I'd still much, much rather we signed Mangala off Porto. He is built like a tank, fast, excellent on the ball, top class defensively, organizes his defense, and is beastly in the air. Now there is a superstar CB in the making! He is 23 now, and this summer may be the last chance for us to sign him.

He would at Arsenal. It's not so much a flaw in Kos as a flaw in our setup. Arsenal have made more last-man tackles than any other team in Premier League for three years running now. We don't commit those fouls because Koscielny and Per are stupid. We commit them because players break through our line a couple of times every game. And they break through because we can neither attack or defend as a team anymore. This is the real Bould effect.

The reason it's Koscielny and not Mertesacker committing the foul most of the time is because Kos is the quickest of the lot. Even a great defender will concede a penalty eventually under those circumstances though.

Similar to Ramsey. Better defensively, not as good going forward. Great engine, strong, excellent tackler, aggressive and superb on the ball/good passer. Physically a monster and good on the ball. Closes down opposition players so quick and a very good "first defender".

The way Chelsea played yesterday really struck me, their commitment, tactical awareness, energy, pace, invention, spirit....we're fucking light years away.

I think you're right. I've seen him a couple of times this season but tonight sealed it for me. Fucking hell he's impressive. Such a rare type of midfielder. He even looks like Ramsey:

Forget about Costa, we can get a striker elsewhere this summer. We need to try for Koke if there's a snowball's chance in hell that they will sell him. He would plug the gaping hole in our midfield.

Koke's long time aim is to be a one club man for this boyhood club. He mentioned it many times in interviews that unless Atletico don't want him, he will never leave. He is their Jenkinson.
