And I don’t at all recall it being the case that Fabregas didn’t take risks and slowed us down.
Was reading something a while ago (from a former player???), that made the observation that Fabregas at CM made dramatic changes to our play that essentially ended Ljunberg's career with us. Not only did the point of distribution change from a deep lying forward to a CM playmaker, but it also impacted our pace & style in transition. This combined with the short passing to feet meant that Ljunberg's runs into space off the ball were no longer as effective as the timing was out of synch.
AW tried to address the position of the playmaker when he moved Fabregas to CAM, but we never regained the incisive passing through midfield in transition until Cazorla's brief time at CM.
As far as I remember, people's problem with Cesc was that Wenger failed to find the right CM balance after Flamini left, and Cesc's weaknesses were exposed. It was never that he slowed our game down or passed sideways. But yes, we built the team around him and inevitably certain parts of the team are going to function differently.
Fuck it, I had to do it, sorry. The guy was a freak.
