Was about to watch the Georgia-Denmark game and then realised that Andersen didn't even make the squad. He'd been there earlier this year.

Promotions - definitely want to see more of Saka and Nelson needs to be given some time even if it’s just to know one way or the other if he can cut it

Never seen Tierney play, but he sounds like a player we could use. Even though our rivals are being linked with much more fashionable players than us, I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the players we're linked with at the moment. We'll see what pans out and not of course, but the general trend seems to be that we're being linked to mostly young players, good players who've gone under the radar to the general public (Praet) or players who would once be marquee signings, but could now be had for a smaller sum due to wrong career choices (Carrasco).

Think we could even add Carrasco to Dula's list if the outgoings match up. 5 incomings seems about right, but it doesn't really fix our CB problem to bring in a teenager, no matter how much potential. Worries me.

Thing is we do have numbers / options at CB - Kos, Sokratis, Holding, Mustafi, Mavropanos, Chambers = I don't think we'll sign a CB unless we are selling, unless it's part of a double header like Anderson + Praet.

Further to this if we actually sorted out the midfield into a functional unit then the issues at CB / defence then become less of a burden.

If we'd secured CL for next season then yes I think we'd be going for Under ahead of Carrasco or Fraser, but not now.

That said they play on opposite flanks so if we manage to shift the likes of Ozil, Mkhi, Mustafi & Kola then damn the torpedoes and full steam ahead.

The thing that's got me interested in the likes of Tierney, Anderson, Praet, Vertout, Carrasco etc is that none of them are gambles like Guendouzi or Torreri were last season other than perhaps Carrasco, but even then he has shown his quality and level of performance at Atletico. All things being equal they are all very capable players that do not need another player to cover such as the likes of Xhaka, Kola, Mustafi.
Praet & Veretout looks like a capable CM pairing with better balance than anything we can currently provide post Rambo - sell Ozil and play an inverted midfield with Torreira/Guendouzi and it looks very stable and capable even though it may lack 'star power' of Ozil or Xhaka.

At the end of the day I've had enough of being occasionally brilliant but terminally flawed.

I see your point regarding Guendouzi, but how are any of them any less a gamble than Torreira?

They are still gambles. Andersen especially feels like Mustafi mark 2, a young defender scouted for his exceptional distribution but still not assured defensively. We know how that panned out the first time round.

i don't see mustafi at all. mustafi is dumb (football wise ... he might be a genius with the books for all i know) and i don't know anything about andersen's football smarts. mustafi would be a top player if he was taller and had some smarts.

It's a bit of an aside but I don't think Mustafi really suffers from being too short. He's had games where he's connected with every header he went for, and games where his timing and concentration has been so off he would never have won the challenge if he was ten feet tall.

Yeah. He seems to lack spatial awareness and the ability to interpret circumstances. Doesn't know where the ball will go next and what to do. It's the opposite of the computing ability of an Ozil who always seems to know where people and the ball will go, and understands how to manipulate the circumstances.

Yeah I worded that a bit wrong. What I was trying to say is that they are established 1st team players who are not still in development. Even Torreira is still developing his game after changing position and role 1-2 seasons before the WC. All 3 of Praet, Veretoutt and Carrasco are aged mid 20s, have over 100 games at senior level, and have moved away from their native leagues meaning they are more likely to be able to adapt to a new country.

It's a case of you know what you are getting, and it's more a question of being the right fit than taking a bigger punt on a player who has never moved from their own country and is still learning their game. The caveat to that being the players who break through into senior levels at a young age and have over 100 games in top flight by the time they are 20-21.

Nice based upon our budget and Europa status.

However if we're selling the likes of Mustafi, Kola, Ozil, Mkhi, Xhaka, PEA & Laca who are basically half the current starting XI (as well as presumably benching Iwobi, Torreria), then I think we could expect to upgrade the midfield and attack with some more established players. That left flank of Tierney - Gambin - Guendouzi & ACM looks raw, there is a lack of goal threat in the midfield.
