Mata was not at all a situation like that. Wenger deserves blame for the goalkeeping situation the last decade, definitely.
I'm pretty sure our bid was accepted for Mata but he chose Chelsea. Same goes for Hazard but Chelsea bid us in term of wages by a couple of millions. In those days we just did not have enough cash to splash in excess just to get players.

Don't think anyone said it was. The decision was down to Hazard as far as I can remember - and I remember him doing something cringe like revealing his club via social media or something like a shit contestant on Take Me Out.

Pretty sure Wenger has said previously that we were prepared to pay Hazard's asking price but were completely blown out of the water on the wages front. So the 'few million' was probably a joke meant to mean a few million more a year.
