I think its ridiculous to call Gibbs "nonsense", if I was getting a new LB he'd be the one I'd keep as back up. Horribly underrated here. A far better defender than Monreal.

I would keep Gibbs to. It's the smart move. Buy a left back for the first 11 and keep Gibbs.0 Monreal is the better player but Gibbs is homegrown and younger.

I think he's as pointless as they come. Can't stay fit either, regardless of whether he's playing or not. How many injuries did he pick up in training last season? He's not a young talent anymore. He will be 26 at the start of next season. This should be his best years, but can you honestly say that he's even on the right track? Is he building form, showing clear signs of improvement from season to season? And he's hardly a unique talent (like Jack) who's worth holding on to. He's just an average footballer who struggles to stay fit. Takes every chance he gets to hide on the field too. The Danny Welbeck of defenders.

Gibbs is like Szczesny - already 26, hard to see any significant progress being made in his development. He is what he is - can stay and be an adequate backup, but a starter in front of him will have to be a step above. Monreal may not be a flashy name or have a flashy game, but he gets his job done. I doubt we're upgrading on him this summer, we're probably getting ready to get a great player in next season. Its not as if there are huge upgrades available among the LBs anyway.

Difference being that Szcz still has time on his hands as goalkeepers prime start much later than any other position on the team. Has a lot ahead of him if he can focus more and cut out the needless theatrics. Gibbs on the other hand is going nowhere. He has not improved in any single aspect since he's joined the first team. Have to agree with Klaus. He is the epitome of average.

Monreal turns 30 in 6 months. Gibbs is 26 in 3 months.

I like Gibbs but I have been disappointed with his lack of progress. Keown on commentary for the last England game was critical of Gibbs' lack of confidence on the ball. He improved a bit in the second half but I think it has been a common source of frustration. He does have the ability to make an impact but doesn't believe in himself. Needs advice from Gok Wan.

Fair play to Monreal, he has been fantastic. I give credit to him and Cazorla who kept going even when everyone around them were dropping like flies. Not easy. That goal at OT in the FA cup has bought him a lot of support. He'll have to turn shit before I fancy having a go at him.

I think Monreal's performances last season are vastly over rated. He had some good games, but most games were meh.

Gibbs should be sold and get a decent fee like Chelsea did with Bertrand.

Agree with this, don't think Gibbs has ever shown form similar to what Monreal has shown over the past 7 months. In fact, Gibbs hasn't even reached Clichy's level yet. I don't think Monreal is the solution to our problems though, he seems like he's in a good run of form and high on confidence rather than showing any exceptional qualities.

Sums it up quite well. Gibbs is a good all-rounder, which isn't a bad quality for a backup.

Not sure about that, there seem to be a dearth of good left and right backs around. The best ones have been all been taken (and that's why I think we've been extremely lucky with Bellerin)

Not very, Madrid have done a number on him. He peaked in Euro 2012.

Figured. I'm sceptical toward any player who's happy to sit on the bench for four years in his prime.

Good post Ricky.

I agree you can pencil in Monreal for another season, although he's not a top player. The development of Gabriel and Bellerin are huge for this team, as is obviously a DM and CF signing. Those are the things that need to fall into place for us to succeed.

Yeah, I'd do that too if we had Azpilicueta and Filipe Luiz.
