We can probably offer Cavani £9m/year without any problems. Strikers get paid. We've paid Henry and van Persie a ton in the past.

United don't need him, they have Rooney and van Persie. They may be rolling in money, as always, but they still have a wage bill to try and consider. Both those two are on ludicrous money, adding Cavani to the wage bill, along with what they already have to try and add to the squad this summer if they want to compete again, will see it spiral out of control petty quickly. You can't just pay everyone 250/300k a week - I think we'd be able to offer good money to him and as a club we'd be a very attractive proposition.

Man u still have lots of work to do in other areas. Don't think they're going for strikers now. They still need at least a couple of defenders and midfielders.

That's not taking into account the stuff about licensing and merchandise though, Claudius. You're a smart guy, you know it's not as straight forward as "£40m a season more". The size of the deal makes it obvious there is a significant difference between this deal and the deals all the other top clubs struck.

Think all the doomsday scenarios you want, at the end of the window, and for a few different reasons, Cavani will not be playing for Manchester United.

As someone else pointed out, it's more important that we can spend £30m on 1-2 players a summer than that United can afford 1-2 £50m players.

Things were considerably worse when they could spend £30m and we could only stump up £10m. And they still don't have Fergie, whether or not Van Gaal hits the ground running he doesn't have two decades of Premier League experience.

That's so untrue. Relative to the market rate they were always underpaid because at that time we don't have much money.

They'll be ramping up their wage bill. Will come a point where offloading will be tough.

They're also still geared up to the Matthews bridge

Henry was the highest paid player in,the prem for 1 season iirc.

He was. Made about 170k/week if I remember correctly, as a result of 'loyalty' and other bonuses kicking in. It was an unsual wage for us. The only other high wage I can remember in the pre-Ozil era was Sol's wage which included an amortised signing-on bonus

But wasn't his normal wages. The Chelsea boys were on higher wages.

We were able to take care of big strikers in the past relative to the limitations of our wage bill. We have players on £130k-£140k now, offering Cavani between £160k-£180k is pretty realistic.
