Immobile might have been the wrong word but he's very slow and that's a bad quality when you are tracking players even when you're an excellent interceptor like Arteta

Robin van Persie, Arsenal's Dutch forward, explains this eloquently. "Cesc is slow," he told the Dutch magazine Hard Gras. "He's one of the slowest here. But he's still the quickest of us all. He always thinks two seconds ahead. I sometimes think, 'why doesn't the opponent take the ball off him?' And then he comes, peep, with a very little feint. In training I catch up with him and think, 'now I'll get you'. And with his toe he gives - peep - a very little pass for a one-two. That gets him another metre-and-a-half. So irritating!"

Now of course because he's very intelligent he can compensate for it in his attacking game but in his defending I doubt it

He's no slower than Pirlo, Busquets, Xavi, Makelele, Gabi, Alonso, Matic, Arteta etc All those players are unsuited to a CM role, eh?

My point was clearly in reference to the formation and was about the defensive duties running and tracking back. Something you've yet to shed light on.

Well I disagree with your point in the 1st place, Cesc isn't immobile and him being slow doesn't mean he can't play CM with Ramsey. Looking at that team, I would take out Sanchez and replace him with a hardworking midfielder like Rosicky or even Chambo and I can see it working. The midfield wouldn't be dissimilar to the one we had in 2007/2008 - one of our best in recent times.

I've figured out how we can get Fabregas into the team, all it takes is 5 other new signings, a complete overhaul of our playing system and the discarding of nearly half our current squad because they don't fit into our sexy new formation. Easy peasy!

But, seriously, I'd love Cesc here but can't see how it'd work.Think we gotta focus on getting in the two or three players we really, really need and then anything else is a bonus. Cesc would be a very nice bonus!

That would be good, but I reckon it will probably end up more like:

get Aurier on the cheap. Haggle over Vela/Griezmann, Balotelli, Schneiderlin all summer, panic and sign Remy and some random GK on aug 31. Tell the fans we still have money and will look to strengthen the team in January...

Anyone wanting to sign Cesc, a defensive midfielder and another winger is living on another planet.

Would effectively have us with 15 players or so competing for 5 positions. Virtually all of them senior and the large majority on new contracts and unlikely to leave. And the worst part is, it's an area we're already really strong in too with the exception of perhaps one starting centre mid.

I'd like a striker a notch up from Giroud, a fast attacking goal scorer for the left wing, a younger,stronger more dynamic defensive minded midfielder to take over from Arteta and a RB as good as Sagna.

Defending is boring anyway so I say we just skip that part, blow all our money and Fabregas and Cavani and line up like this:

When people suggest that we should skip defending altogether, they're usually not entirely serious. But yeah, a super entertaining team where every game would end 5-5 was what I was going for.
