One would think that he'll settle for Germany in the end.

As I understand it, the issue with Gedion is not with his inability to acquire US citizenship [which apparently he is eligible for without any issues per journalists, his father]. Rather, it is that at present he needs to maintain his German citizenship in order to maintain his EU passport and play for Arsenal without the necessity of a work permit which, at this point, would require an appeal as he does not meet the minimum requirements. Germany, unlike other countries, would rescind his German citizenship were he to seek American citizenship without any special reason.
I'm not entirely sure that's the case - I know people who have dual Swedish and German citizenship, for instance - but I'm not well versed on the finer details. It might be some form of special EU arrangement.
