Maybe we should consign gifs to specific gif threads only?

I don't know about disabling gifs altogether but you can disable animated gifs in Firefox and Internet Explorer - http://www.wikihow.com/Stop-Animated-Images-in-a-Browser

Whether that stops them from downloading (the real issue) though, I'm not sure...

You should be able to disable gifs on your browser. Would solve the problem for those that need it, and it wouldn't spoil things for the rest of us.

Thats an awful idea. Gifs are fun.

Lagos if you have adblocker you can select to hide images from certain sites. I reckon after about a month of blocking most gifs parent sites you'd have your problem 99% solved.

Not sure whether it's a realistic option here, but some message boards have the 'spoiler' function, which can come handy with pictures. Saves your browser from the trouble of loading all the picures/gifs/videos you have already seen or don't want to see.

There are .gif and flash blocking extensions for all of the major browsers.

Adblock can also be configured to block certain extensions.

greasemonkey can also be configured to block certain extensions from loading.

There are loads of workarounds to this problem.

Yep. Might still be a hassle with certain mobile browsers that don't support extensions the same way. Just sayin'
