Not that I for one second believe the article, but I think if Bolton still hope to get £17M for a player who has 10 months left on his contract and are actively demanding that much, it's them that are "taking the mickey".

It's not their fault though. They see Liverpool and United make these insane signings and want a piece of the cake. Jones went for £20 million. Downing for £20 million. Henderson cost £16 million. Smalling to United cost another £16 million last year. The price tag for Cahill is in line with those. Only problem is that they're all out of line.

Noone's in for him anymore though. Liverpool are going for Coates, ManU don't need defenders, and same with Chelsea (?).

He has 10 months left on his contract so we're obviously are going to lowball them to death.

Jones is looking like a good deal so far. He's going to be worth it when Ferdinand's knees finally pack up. I think we can do a 12m straight up deal. 6 million is taking the mickey in this climate

We might have some hope of making the lowball strategy work if clubs didn't know what our transfer budget was.

the only hope is that we are the only ones in for both Cahill and Jagielka: this would put Bolton under a lot of pressure because they would be in a position where they could risk losing him for free in a year and we had the alternative of Jagielka. Everton wouldn't be as rattled, but Bolton would be in a desperate place

They also know we've never overpaid by so much as a pound for any player.

Still, even with "extras" £6m does seem hilariously low for Cahill.

I just hope we've made a bid, I don't care what the figure actually is. We all know that should we sign Cahill it will be for the absolute minimum fee that Bolton were prepared to sell at. To the pound.

Did we not just get 24 million for a player in the same contract situation?

Off the richest club in the world, for one of the best players around last season. Not really comparable. Even then imo it was stupendous money that we got for Nasri.

Whatever the case, if Bolton think they're getting £17M from anyone for Gary Cahill then they're sadly mistaken.

Keep thinking about the whole Shwartzer situation with this.

I can see us keep offering unacceptable amounts just to placate fans, "We tried, we really did try"

That said, if we do sign him, at least we won't see much of Squillaci anymore. Cahill will take his place on the bench for sure.

Think about it though, Liverpool have just put their money into Uruguayan Sebastien Coates, City have done their defensive spending with Clichy and Savic, United have signed Jones, Chelsea spent big in January on Luiz - we have Bolton over a barrel. Either they sell to us for a reasonable fee or they kiss goodbye to a sizeable chunk of money.
