People seem to think this is a game changer and are already talking about who we'll get in the next two windows, I think it'll be a cold day in hell before Wenger spends like this again.

Granted in the past Wenger has let plenty of opportunities slip because he wouldn't spend, circumstances did indeed change when Ivan spilled the beans under pressure it must be added, he passed this pressure onto to Wenger who tbf delivered.

Don't get me wrong- I'm really happy with the players in the team at the moment, but I've got no faith that Wenger will continue spending.

An opportunistic signing or two is exactly what we've lacked.

I'm fucking glad Wenger didn't decide to give up on bringing anyone in after the Higuain and Suarez deals went south. The tier we need to buy in no transfer can be guaranteed - too much scrutiny and competing interest from other clubs.

Think we'll be spending more cash from here on in even if our other parameters remain the same. We are far richer than we were, so 20m fees will become a norm for us, unfortunately 30m asking prices will also become normal.

I think there was definitely a paradigm shift, presumably under pressure from Kroenke/Board/Gazidis or whoever. In a press conference a few weeks ago (before the Ozil signing), Wenger answered a question saying he had no objection to paying above market price for a player, as long as they could afford it. Think he was convinced to not worry about "value" so much, and assured the money was there and told to send it on some top player(s) that will rejuvenate the passion of everyone (fans, players, etc) and send a message that we are now in the top bracket.

Wenger spent big on Ozil because the base of the side was sound. He wanted Suarez because he thought their was a buy out, that was also opportunistic. We could have added a world class player pretty much anywhere in the team and for Wenger that was always going to be in the attack. He said we had the quality and that what he wanted to add was top, top quality. That is what we got.

As long as we've no gaping holes I think we'll continue to look for superstars. I also think Kroenke and Gizidis realise we need top stars to keep flogging tickets at top, top prices.

Till last season opportunism for us meant a £15 Million signing from a club struggling financially and eager to raise money by selling. This season it's buying a £40 Million player, the best in his position, from the biggest club in the world, because the player was unhappy.

Isn't most of the movement of top players between top clubs opportunistic anyway? The reasons could be multifarious.

Just like the bids for Bender & Suarez? Quite clearly a shift in our transfer policy and it should be welcomed. AFAIK we did enquire about Ozil before but the deal was only made possible once Bale's transfer was concluded or imminent. Not quite a punt on a player and we got lucky.
