I'll always prefer Monreal to Gibbs. They both have their flaws as players, but with him at least they are clearly outweighed by the positives. It looks like he's finally clicked in Premier League this season.

I thought he was masterful yesterday, same as Bellerin. I don't think Gibbs and Debuchy would have put in performances like that.

Safe to say he was key to our win yesterday, Kompany taking him down as he did put the first few nails in the City coffin.

Agree. He just seems more reliable and robust than Gibbs. Gibbs offers nothing going forward

We've lost twice with Monreal starting this season. 2 in a row, Swansea and Utd.

I thought he dealt poorly with Navas, he beat him plenty and got a good few dangerous balls into the box because of it.

Yup, Navas and Zabaleta went past him several times. Have no idea where the notion comes from that he stopped a lot of crosses coming in. He never does, and he certainly didn't yesterday. For instance, he certainly should have done a better job on the cross we miraculously managed to escape from; if Kos gets a better touch on the ball it is an own goal, if he doesn't get a touch at all on it, Agüero walks the ball into the net. Fortunately, he got it juuuuuust right. 🙂

Also, that stat up there - Monreal has played most of his games at CB, so naturally he is going to play a LOT more passes forward than any FB in the league. He can't very well pass it back to the goalkeeper every time. 🙂

Navas never beat him though. He just drifted wide where Monreal couldn't follow and waited for a pass. Or, as Rex says, they crowded our left. Show me a fullback that can mark two players at the same time.

I definitely get the criticism of Monreal in general, it's just that yesterday he was good.

He was. Still allowed too many crosses, but that is par for him.

Rex, good point about him playing CB and that inflating his pass forward vs back.

Monreal had 7 interceptions, 11 clearances, 5 blocks and won the penalty yesterday. Really good match.

I'd bet good money on Coquelin averaging more forward passes than both Arteta and Flamini though. I really like his passing in that sense.

Who knows how long it will stay up - but the video is pretty good, and highlights the Navas cross/close chance.

Monreal is getting stick for that but he plays it well. Is tight to Navas, who passes it off, then has to track the more dangerous run (Zabaleta?) which leads to Navas having an easy cross/opening.

I watched that earlier and usually I roll my eyes at the Sky 'analysis' but thought it was pretty good there. The stat they came up with was remarkable too:

Not that I think not having the ball is a good tactic, but makes you wonder. 6 out of 8 of those games have happened in the last 2 years. Ramsey said the tactics yesterday were to let them have the ball out wide and deal with the crosses. Usually a weak point of ours, but get the numbers back and we didn't look troubled apart from that one counter that Carragher talks about.

Their front 3 was Milner, Aguero, Navas with Silva in behind the striker. If we can't beat them in the air we're in trouble. I doubt Wenger would have tried that if they'd Yaya and Bony available (especially considering what Bony did to us vs Swansea).
