To be fair to Vermaelen, I really doubt that this was his idea. More likely to be the product of some patronizing pr-idiot. Not that TV5 should have gone along with it. I mean, it's like if Arsenal wanted to promote themselves in Norway and they'd all show up in Viking helmets wielding axes, expecting us to find it flattering that they'd take the time and effort to mimic our distant forefathers.
