I don't buy that, Biggus. He's not a holding midfielder. Arteta plays that role and he does it pretty well. Song is a box to box midfielder. He's supposed to contribute in both ends. A far more serious failure this season is that the wide players and the attacking mid haven't contributed much to the defensive side of our game. Neither has Robin since around Christmas.
When the game turns it's usually just Song and Arteta trying to defend of the "front six", which means that we've got two players trying to stop the opponents on 2/3 of the field. That's why teams like Norwich can drive a bloody bus through our midfield. As long as they counterattack with more than two players they'll outnumber us until they reach the final third, and usually we're still wide open down their right flank at that point if Gibbs is on the field.
