I like Arshavin and I think he's still got a lot to offer the team. But he's 30 this summer with, reportedly, just 12 months left on his contract. I'd like to see him get an extension, but I can also see an argument for cashing in.

agree with that. problem is if we cash in, we'd need to buy someone who could make at least as big of an impact for the first team.

Don't want to turn this into the Arshavin thread, but I completely agree with you. The amount of criticism he gets from Arsenal fans never ceases to amaze me.

you quote those words and say you completely agree ... what am i to think that means? i understand that to be "you see how insanely gifted he is in this video, we should appreciate him more instead of giving him stick." now WTF does his dominant year with zenit have to do with today? shava does not play with that pace anymore. that club season and then the subsequent euro campaign were the peak of his powers. it's completely irrelevant today and if he actually played like that he would be appreciated more. that video is simply nostalgia.

It's almost the very definition of a straw man. You create a ridiculously simplified (and frankly, incorrect) version of the argument, and then mock it. Completely missing the point.

I put to you that posting that video of Arshavin from 2008 is no different from someone posting a video of Fabregas against AC Milan in 2008 and saying "What an awesome player he is! So glad he's at the club!". The past is the past. That changes nothing though. Shava was, and is, an exceptionally talented footballer who changes matches.

Also, note Clrnc's sentences do not follow directly after each other - they are separated by a paragraph. As far as I understood it, Clrnc was simply making the point that Shava showed great pace in the video. He then decided to say that as Arsenal fans, we don't appreciate him enough. They are not necessarily linked. And you know what? Even if they are linked, it still makes perfect sense. He's still one of our quicker and most penetrative attacking players.

I won't even mention the fact that he single-handedly earned us a draw today... oops.

Meatwad has it right. If you know a player was a genius elsewhere it hardly helps you to tolerate erratic performances for Arsenal, no matter how occasionally brilliant.

Good play from Arshavin for our goals today, however. His strike for the first was impeccable and he put in several useful crosses in the second half as well.

this was only in preseason, but one of my favourite henry goals. just an absurd level of skill.

And yet nobody, meatwad included, has refuted any points raised in my follow-up post. But there you go. I did mention that the two sentences were most likely not linked, and Clrnc himself has confirmed that. Nothing more to add.

Oh, and that Henry goal is one of my favourites as well. Magical.

i don't need to refute it because i already said my piece and we'll just be going in circles. his absolute best form at zenit is the reason why arsenal fans should just be grateful that he plays for us and decides to give effort once every 3 games. i get it. why would we be bothered when one of the highest earners on the team can't be bothered sometimes when we know he's capable of so much more (even if he can't duplicate 2008). but fuck that, did you see how fast he's running for zenit, don't dare talk bad about him even though he hasn't come close to delivering in that manner for arsenal the way he carried zenit to a uefa cup. kneel before zenit shava. i'll appreciate him MORE when he delivers MORE consistently ... he's a flaky player and i'm flaky towards him.

oh and if arsenal fans want to talk about cesc delivering in an arsenal shirt, i have no problem with that. i don't care about the heights an arsenal player has reached in another shirt when he's not reaching those heights for us.

I'll upload it again if I can figure out why the site is adding black side borders to the video. Usually all you have to do to avoid it is to maintain the aspect ratio but they must've changed some setting somewhere.

Edit: Looks like the side borders are only visible if you access the clip through youtube.
