Unless we have made a deal of something like £13m plus add-ons, I really don't see this happening. Can't get my head around breaking the £20m barrier on a relatively unproven 20 year old. Wouldn't expect a medical on friday or anything either.

I think Wenger would like to work with a player of this profile but he won't fancy that sort of investment.

A straight up £21m..?

As said, can't see it unless there are significant performance related bonuses and I'm not sure Brazilian clubs go for that. Neymar, for instance, has guaranteed staggered payments with bonuses of only 1 or 2 million (on a 50m transfer fee).

Well, it's ten years on since we paid £10.5m for Reyes. I don't think £21m would be that outlandish myself.

I think Wenger weighs up every deal on the strength of whether or not he can produce that kind of player from what he has on his own books and I think he can when it comes to Bernard.

Given what Wengie is like. I'd be really excited about a £20m signing if he's an unproven youngster than an established good-but-world class player. Like it or not, one thing Wenger always knows is getting the best out of uber talented youngsters. While we don't want to keep waiting for these youngsters to grow up, anyone who commands a £20m fee must've shown considerable talent. Unless Liverpool have bought him.

I sorta agree with Capi. Doesn't really fit that we're willing to part so easily with 21m yet hesitate to sign established players for marginally more. The only way is if Wenger think's he'll be worth a lot more in a year or two.
