Yeah. It ties into the scandals and the economy. People have known for a long time that people like Moggi and Berlusconi have been running a separate race. Calciopoli was just a long overdue reaction. Remember Milan's relegation in the 80s? Napoli's ties to the Neapolitan mafia? Juve's drug trials? It's been a nightmare of corrupt capitalism in the past decades and the latest match-fixing investigations haven't exactly helped. Added to that people have less money than ever to spend on football.

My prediction at the beginning of the season of 3rd place doesn't seem as far-fetched now although that's more an indictment on the quality in the league than any achievement by us. It'll be close although my biggest concern would be finishing above Spurs even if we do finish inside the top four - Chelsea are laughably inconsistent and really should be well in front of us with their squad.

Minor tidbit on Swansea wages:

Wages accounted for a healthy 52% of a £65m turnover thanks to a salary cap that ensures no Swansea player earns more than £35,000 a week. They are all on heavily incentivised contracts and win bonuses of £5,000 a game are attractive even by Premier League standards.

I wonder if over time and as we renew players, we could look at increasing the proportion of our wage load that's tied to league wins. I doubt we're in that 15-20% incentive bracket.

I don't understand the concept of a a flat wage structure, if there was ever an occupation that should be remunerated heavily in favour of outcome related bonuses it should be professional football.

it's obvious. the supply of average players is enormous. they're fungible commodities. the supply of matchwinning world class players, on the other hand, is very small. if van persie/fabregas/probably wilshere in 2 yrs wants 180k, you give it to him.
