It's all speculative but when a couple of goals would put us still in contention, and when we've been quite consistently toothless and had terrible options off the bench, I don't see why the suggestion a second-rung addition could've changed the equation is controversial.

agree with kel to an extent. giroud requires that we commit midfield bodies forward, which is ok when you have an outstanding two way player like ramsey has been. the whole "system" was badly exposed when ramsey got injured. the best teams these days defend with a combination of midfield pressing and clever use of possession, neither of which we were capable of when rambo went down. there aren't many truly elite back fives out there at the moment. with a stronger partner for ramsey and a better striker, our current defense would be fine imo.

But Giroud is not that sort of quick nippy striker who plays off the shoulder he's a target man.
I agree he doesn't fit the system we play, but whatdya gonna do Wenger knows......

So Giroud is slow. It makes our midfielders go forward. Leaves us exposed. We concede 5. Okay.

Still maintain that our bigger attacking problem was not having a second Theo around. Another person to stretch defenses and provide a credible alternative threat to occupy opposition defenders. Such a creature could have been found in the last two windows.

As for the problems in the back, that's 100% the fault of a pompous coach who sees himself as above defensiveness

The full backs in particular have to push up a lot more than they should because our midfield is getting choked, teams keep a high line meaning there is less space and then no movement in front three. Notice since Ozil and Ramsey have been back they've stayed a lot deeper and we've retained a better defensive shape.

All these tactical analysis is all every well, but we lost by so huge a margin .... it has to be about minds, hearts, management AND match day tactics/lack of substitutions .

Sheffield United (for example) would probably had better scorelines than we had against the big teams. They are not a better team of individuals, so what else is it?

Time for a change.

What a breath of fresh air can do to your optimism. Come on you conservative Gooners, breathe in .... wait .... breathe out .... now accept that change is not always for the worst.

And I will accept that change does not always be for the better. But FREE yourselves man. Wenger is over as a title winning guy.

I'd be happy to do that if it was actually going to happen. But given that he's likely to stay another 2-3 years, I'd rather look ahead with optimism rather than put myself in a foul mood.

Winning the FA Cup would be the best thing in years. I'm finding it pretty easy to be happy and excited about the final, worry about Wenger's contract and the summer transfer window later.

I'm with otfgoon. Everyone wanted Wenger gone at some point but hes here. This team is starting to shape up nicely so why constantly moan all year ?

Our passing quality isn't good enough to cope with it either; too many of our players are pretty average on the ball. We can't hit long balls behind the back four either to get out of trouble. It is unfathomable why Wenger thought Giroud would be a good choice up front for us.

It's not just Giroud at centre forward so much as that we too often haven't had any real pace plus finishing at all across the forward line with Walcott out.

It's no coincidence that the only one of these four away thrashings Walcott's been in the side for was City, where he scored twice.

True, things would be better with Walcott up front, but that still doesn't excuse Wenger for signing Giroud.

Giroud is an absolutely awful striker. His movement off the ball, as I said, is shockingly poor. Same can be said about Podolski to some degree. Two players who should at best be squad fillers here.

Podolski is worse. His lack of drive to get into the box or a dangerous position is infuriating. Half the time you see Santi, Mesut or Aaron on the ball and he's just standing there 2 yards away from them. There are even times we're launching a counter and he's just jogging over the half way line watching the attack unfold rather than being a part of it. He's been better in the last few games in fairness, and so has Giroud in that regard.

Yep, that's why Wenger doesn't play him too often.
