Maybe they feel they need a pacy player next to Mertesacker but Boateng was unimpressive in the recent qualifier Germany had against Austria.
He was never on the same wavelength of the other defenders, who were trying to play offside, and consistently dropping back, alone, thus ending up playing the opposition strikers and runners onside, time and time again.
Luckily for him, the Austrian strikers were in Gervinho mode for that game.
