I was completely expecting him to come back to football after a couple of years. Thats fucking awful.

That's fucking awful. I read yesterday that he had been hospitalised again after surgery and things were bad. The news made it sound like he was going to recover though.

I was unaware of his current condition too, so has come as a real surprise to me.

Patters - It's not an illness that has affected me, or anyone dear to me. It terrifies me that one day it will. More than anything i'd say. I hope the worst is over for you.

thanks, yes it's all good now. It's not hereditary theoretically and often you don't do anything wrong (hence the crapshoot comment), but there have been statistical studies that show some links. But I don't know much at all about throat cancer which was the unfortunate case here.

Atletico are now just 2 easy wins away from winning the title. People talk about Liverpool, but what Atletico has done to fight against the 2 best team, richest team in the world is unreal. I remember people saying how we should bid for Diego Costa, Koke etc in January which says alot, they are now just a step away from a UCL final appearance and the title while we are fighting Everton for 4th.

Just been announced that West Ham and Newcastle will come on a pre-season tour to NZ to make up a 4 team tournament with Wellington and Sydney from the A League. West Ham presumably convinced by having Winston Reid. Pretty big coup for NZ Football. Double header of Sydney vs West Ham and Wellington vs Newcastle on July 26 in Wellington so will definitely go to that. Couple of other games elsewhere in the country. Not sure how many of West Ham or Newcastle's big players will be playing, none who are in the World Cup I guess although not sure they'll have many there anyway.

They'll both have been sacked by then won't they? Maybe Moyes instead! Nolan and Carroll out on Courtney Place (main Wellington nightlife area) on the Saturday night should get people's smartphones out. No doubt Alfonso will be in the clubs to get the stories!

They probably will be fairly easy to see out and about. Wellington is a pretty small town and there's only one 5 star hotel so whenever there's a visiting sports team or singer/band they always stay there. And you always see them out and about in the CBD (I work on the main street that runs through the CBD).

Not the best scheduling with the double header being a Saturday in the middle of our season so a large chunk of those who would go will be playing/coaching/refereeing their own games. There will probably be some pressure to postpone games that weekend or maybe try and give everyone weeknight games instead.

Edit: They have now agreed to postpone all games on that day.

Anyone else watching Juve-Benfica?

Love the quick one and two touch stuff from Benfica. So many quick, skilful players.

Juve are much more direct, but still play with good pace. Pogba has been class on the ball for them, playing in a Diaby-style left midfield role. He's a very clever footballer. Vidal's a ball of energy, similar to Ramsey, but I don't think he has as much quality. I wouldn't swap them.

Benfica now down to 10 men. Stupid second yellow for them. Gonna be tight, fancy Juve to find a goal.

Not even on the pitch, all the action's on the benches. Vucinic going crazy about something and has been red carded even though he was an unused substitute. Markovic, who had just been subbed, got a red too and will miss the final if Benfica hold on - which is a shame because he was excellent whilst on the pitch.

Into the 5th minute of stoppage time now.

Juve weren't good enough in the end. Not enough quality going forward.

This was a brilliant game.

Have to say, I was very impressed by Benfica. Similar to Atletico last night, very smart in defence, a lot of energy and played some good quick and direct combination football. Jorge Jesus should definitely be on the shortlist as potential Wenger replacements. Seems to be quite the character as well.

That Lazar Markovic fella looked interesting, nimble feet, good pace, tracked back, lungs of steel. Shame he won't be playing in the final.
