Dont think its essentially true that pure defensive midfielders are out of the game. Mikel, Diarra, Sandro, Lucas are not out of jobs yet and apparently the likes of Capoue, Wanyama, Tiote et al. are coveted. Yes they might make some forward surges from time to time but I would brand them as defensive midfielders.

I see what you are saying and could probably be convinced to agree, as it could be argued that Busquets is all of those, but i think it probably depends on what you and i, personally, define as
1-"top level"
2-"out and out"
3-"pure"
4-"defensive".
To me, this rules out most of your list apart from, maybe, one or two at a stretch

He really needs to improve his variety.
Playing at the top with top level performers may just do the trick.
