Think Rooney pretty much holds the cards as far as money is concerned. Either a big fish is out there who will pay his wages, or he runs down his contract on his current huge deal another year, same situation next summer, and then has the option to leave on a free for a pretty big deal elsewhere.
It's in terms of whether he gets to play or not, and where, that United have some leverage.
