Pure spculation on my part, but the speed at which the deal was finally made and the subsequent stories about him learning English suggests to me that this was probably a deal planned for the summer but brought forward by Gibb's breakdown.

I think you're right. Wenger admitted that we've been tracking him for a while too.

Yep. Spells the end of Santos as well. Think we probably targeted a LB after abject showing from Santos and then the shirt swapping saga. Wenger thought we can persist with him as backup for awhile till the summer but Gibbs injury changed everything.

I am happy with this signing, but not the transfer window. Can't believe such a poor season still won't convince Wenger to spend.
