THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY is a terrific example of a WWI film and it's in stark contrast to 1917. It's WWI-adjacent rather than "set in the trenches", educates its audience about the motives and stakes of history unfolding in Ireland in that era, and builds up an incredible pathos for its characters. Cried the first time I saw it because it's so undeniably tragic.
I wish Ken Loach made many more films that were that good, or that other filmmakers were making its equivalent for other countries touched by that war.
