I haven’t enjoyed the recent DC movies. That’s what I meant.

There was a middle aged chap reclined next me in the cinema. Every time Amber came on screen, he’d holler “damn” or “yes!!” His wife was not impressed.

What did everyone here think of Three Billboards?

I don’t know how to feel about it. Call me old fashioned but I like my movies to have an arc, and if not, it would have to be pretty damn good at whatever it tries to achieve. I’m not sure it does that despite some great acting, partially because I’m not sure what the point is, maybe that’s on me. Regardless, Dixon’s development is just fairytale ridiculous.

Like every other Martin McDonagh film it features incongruously drawn characters and poor dialogue. If Seven Psychopaths was "McDonagh does Tarantino (badly)" this was "McDonagh does the Coens (badly)".

Despite that, it's compelling and I wouldn't say don't watch it. Just don't expect anything to feel like it's really hanging together while it's contrived to hang together.

Unpopular opinion, without Heath Ledger's Joker those films would hardly be any better than the average standard of the DCEU.

Apples and oranges really. Batman made its money before Emerging Markets boomed. While cinemas have remained stable in the West, out here, they are opening everywhere and getting fancier all the time.

Meh. All of those movies have their faults, but Batman Begins is much better than the average standard that is what... Man of Steel? I do think like they're overrated by many to the extent that they're considered cinematic masterpieces. I have a feeling that those who don't think they're that good focus on how much worse it is than popular opinion, rather than considering only the movie in itself. I know I do this myself sometimes.

Like Claudius said, the changing of the worldwide market matters a lot here. That, inflation and ticket prices. If adjusted for inflation only, The Dark Knight made twice of what Aquaman made in USA, but the overseas market has gotten incredibly big. Aquaman nearly made as much in China as in USA, iirc.l

I agree, those Batman films are vastly overrated and basically carried by Ledger. Batman Returns is still the most fun Batman for me.

The thing is, Batman Begins isn't really much better than Man of Steel. It only had the appalling Batman and Robin, which is well below even the average DCEU standard, and X-Men to be compared to, so it's been flattered for years.

I'm not a big fan of any of these films, but I do think Batman Begins had a couple of things going for it because of its connection to (relative) realism. It churned out a couple of relatable characters even if it was still working within the illogical trappings of Batman. That fact has probably also made it overrated in a broader sense though.

The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises are just bad films in my opinion; outrageously overrated in a genre that has contributed with absolutely nothing, so fans cling to people like Nolan who can give it a bit of cred. It's very similar to how comic book fans insisted on Frank Miller for so long. I'd go as far as saying the actor carrying the trilogy wasn't Ledger, but Michael Caine.
