That's pretty generous, Burnsy. Rogue One aside, I think basically every film since ROTJ has been below average to absolute garbage.

I don't agree with your theory though. I read a bunch of expanded universe novels that took place after ROTJ and they were great. It's what frustrated me most about TFA - they had absolutely mountains of material to take inspiration from and they decided to make a copy of A New Hope.

I read a chunk of EU stuff in my late teens, and i think it gets lionised a bit too much. there's plenty of silliness and inconsistency in there as well (luuke skywalker anyone?). There's also more scope to ruminate and deliberate over the nature of the force in novel form, which makes it a favorite of the more hardcore audience. If you look purely at the movies, burns is right - there's not much meat there outside of jedi vs sith and empire vs rebels.

Outside of that, there doesn't seem to be anything worthwhile going on in the galaxy. TLJ tried to introduce some moral greyness and nuance with the del toro plotline, and it just felt wrong

It would take something amazing to rejuvinate the mainline trilogy at this point

I think the universe and characters are more than rich enough to build on personally, they just have to be willing to move away from the original narrative to an extent (and characters) to free themselves and open it up.

You joke, but I actually wouldn't be surprised if it was the lowest grossing episode of the new trilogy. That solo movie got outearned by the meg on global box office

@[deleted] - it's easy to say that, but striking a balance of familiarity and freshness is difficult, especially for a franchise with so much history

I never did get what people loved so much about Star Wars and why is had such a huge following. Could never get into it myself and always found myself bored watching.

I think after this new trilogy ends they'll move away from it.

As it happens I watched Solo last night. It was fun but a bit messy. First act is particularly poor. Enjoyed it after that though. One thing about the new Star Wars movies people don't give enough credit for is how good they look. I can't think of any other big budget franchises of recent years that come close to looking so good.

Yeah, Rian Johnson is making the new trilogy, and it's supposed to be a new story entirely. Hope they haven't changed their minds after TLJ's reception.

It was a decent film. I have a couple of critic friends who I think have over-defended it slightly at this point due to the backlash from the sort of MRA / Sad Puppies type contingent who feel they have special rights over fan "properties" …

I agreed with very few of the prevailing criticisms, but I did think the screenplay had major flaws to go with its great ideas. The most important aspects, such as the dramatic tensions between Luke, Rey and Kylo, were handled very well.

This is why this is the only interactive place that I spend significant time. When fan went out of their way to attack Rotten tomatoes, I gave up. These are probably men in their 40s, btw. Not 13 year olds

To be fair to the internet, the chans / MRAs / Sad Puppies etc don't define "internet culture", they're just hypervisible because they're so well organised when it comes to skewing polls or harassing public figures. Fuck 'em all.

Saw two movies this weekend. Deadpool 2 and Breakfast Club again after long time

Deadpool 2 - much funnier than the first which I didn’t enjoy. Liked the supporting cast, particularly Brolin and Beetz.

Breakfast Club - wonderfully scripted and set up. Some great performances. Really enjoyed the dialogue. Would love to see it as a play. There was some discriminatory language and inappropriate sexual advances that would not fly if the movie was remade in 2018. Interesting to see how far the world has moved in just over a generation. I watched it because I had recently seen To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before which critics loved, but I felt lacked that x-factor that famous teen movies had. Hughes and Fey gave us memorable teen movies

This is very interesting to me. You didn't like the first one, and found the second one funnier. in my personal view, it was the same kind of humor in the second as was in the first, just with a couple extra characters. Granted, I liked both movies, but I certainly didnt think the second one was a lot funnier than the first.

I agree. The second one, despite trying with spirit not to be, was basically a less funny retread of the first.

I found the first one too much. It’s a bit like the Guardians. I liked them in small doses in Infinity War. They were authentically Guardians but I wasn’t beaten with it for 2 hours.

I thought Deadpool 1 and 2 were very similar in approach. Preferred two thanks to the plot.
