It's very hard to know what goes into a good Star Wars movie, but it's pretty easy to know some of the things that don't:

[spoiler]gratingly bad creature design (there's always some, but please, not too many screen minutes)
suspiciously racist aliens
overly high ratio of whining to pluckiness among the protagonists
excessively visually busy combat scenes without comprehensible vectors of movement
seemingly pointless or underdeveloped plots involving fleets and battle stations[/spoiler]

and a few other things.

For me this film was really only a bit average on the final point.

I enjoyed it. Unlike the others the story was pretty easy to follow and didn't feature most of the negative points Burns just listed. And due to my complete ignorance about the eventual fate of young Anakin I was quite dismayed at how the story panned out for that cute little kid from the phantom menace.

I was also dismayed at what a cartoon character Vader turned out to be in the original movies.

I think you're spot on there. And I think some of the less slick parts that people are complaining about are quintessentially Star Wars and are only there for that reason.

A few people have pointed out more logical problems to me today, enough that it's probably a bit of an issue, and it's also a bit strange and disjointed that some of the biggest questions posed by The Force Awakens are rejected rather than progressed by this film.

there were a billion plot holes but I was willing to let it go cos they bloody fixed the shite stuff in TFA. Admittedly by fixed is mostly "thrown out the window" but happy to be rid regardless.

Saw the Last Jedi.

It's very hard to pin down exactly what was wrong with it but I felt disconnected from the characters and events for pretty much the entire movie. The last act was good though.

Cast is a mixed bag, could be good but apart from the remake of 11 the Oceans films have been pretty bad.

Speaking of Oceans, Logan Lucky was pretty fun. Nothing spectacular, but good entertainment.

Don't quite know what to make of The Foreigner. A weird genre mix, but watching old Jackie Chan fight and Brosnan speak Irish for a couple of hours works for me. Like BW said about Wind River the noble avenger would in real life be a violent abuser, so those who have problems with that probably won't like it.

[spoiler]I always thought the snoke theories were just overzealous internet fanboyism. So much of it is dictating how people react to these things.

I don't actually believe there is no outline and that Johnson was let do whatever. Just look at how they are controlling directors on the offshoot films. No way he got to define the force however he wanted and kill off characters that mattered.[/spoiler]
