Apparently they've started filming the Hobbit, finally.
Martin Freeman in the lead role - that's a big call, and possibly a masterstroke.

Seeing Submarine on Wednesday at the UK's oldest working cinema.
Very rarely do i look forward to films as much as this. I think This Is England was probably the last.
RocktheCasbah wrote:Watched Brighton Rock tonight. Thought it was really good, Sam Riley delivers a very good- if totally unsympathetic- performance. Thought the storyline a touch unbelievable and the ending a bit of a cop out but didn't spoil anything. Winters Bone should arrive tomorrow, really looking forward to that.
Cool - glad to see a positive review of that, I thought it looked quite decent from the trailer. I really love the book, and the old Richard Attenborough film that starts with a documentary short apologising and saying "Brighton really isn't that bad". Got into it as a kid thanks to Morrissey name-checking Pinkie's gang in the opening track of Vauxhall and I.

Yeah, Martin Freeman has the right attributes to make Bilbo work. Most importantly, despite being a natural for a hobbit part, he looks like a man, not a boy. It would've annoyed me no end if they'd cast a Dominic Monaghan type as per Lord of the Rings.
Just watched Winter's Bone. Loved it. One of the most tense films I've seen for a long time.
It's fucking great that film. Think I should re-watch it. Real menace in there.
Winter's Bone? Sounds like one of those Ron Jeremy classics. What are you lot watching? :-)
The trailer for Yakuza Weapon has finally been released, and it looks insane:
It's starring cult actor Tak Sakaguchi who played the main role in Versus a few years back. I don't think he's ever made a bad movie.

Loved it.
Klaus, as someone who also loves his Wes Anderson films, i think you'll appreciate Ayoade's debut film too.
I'll give it a watch! The plot sounds a little bit like Rushmore.
Said the same earlier, it did remind me of Rushmore. There's definitely an influence there. Shot beautifully, touching storyline...but it has his own stamp also. It's hilarious, not just through the script and the cringeworthy nature in which teenagers deal with situations, but some of the editing that's gone into it is excellent. Highly recommend it.
I'm going to see it at the weekend, really looking forward to it now.
Saw one review describing it as a "bright sunny blast of delight" of a film, "a reminder of what you can do with a bit of imagination and the desire to be different".
Didn't realise until today that Ayoade was the guy from the IT Crowd.
I've not read a bad review about it yet. Hope he continues with it.
Fair game last night. My mates didn't seem terribly impressed but I enjoyed it a lot. I thought Penn and Watts were both very good.

i must have watched a different Winters Bone than you guys did.. it was OK, but hardly what i would consider menace or tense... of the 10 nominated films, would be at like 6 or 7 for me

i've known Martin Freeman was going to be the lead for about a year now.. you're just hearing this now? should be interesting.. i like him, but havent really seen him in that much
Haven't bothered reading much about it, given how unstable the whole project was...
That Limetless is quite entertaining.
Yeah, I enjoyed it. Great idea for film.
Re-watching Le Samourai at the moment. All class.
Went to see Submarine earlier. Thought it was brilliant. Very, very funny, sad and recognizable. Only complaint would be not enough Paddy Considine, but that's a minor issue.
Just watced machete. Totally ossum. Now just made a coffee and gonna watch saw 8
Machete don't text.
Saw The Brothers Bloom; two thirds of a very good movie. Last 30 minutes or so were a bit of a chore.
Funny Games US last night. Errrr, didn't like it.
didnt like that movie either..
anyone see The Long Kiss Goodnight? had never seen it, but caught it on Encore today.. wasnt half-bad
A red letter day, US! A film we finally agree on. Like the Long Kiss Goodnight too.
LOL.. now if we can get Burnsy to agree, it will be a true day to remember..
would love to do this in barcelona
Loved the scene where he used that guy's intestines as a rope when he jumped out the window.
best film ever innit klaus?!
Anyone seen Skyline? Is it as awful as it looked in the trailer?

It's great. Best thing that ever came out of that grindhouse revival. Love when DeNiro switches teams towards the end too.
otfgoon wrote:Anyone seen Skyline? Is it as awful as it looked in the trailer?
I'd say worse.
It's shit.
Watched The Warrior's Way. It was entertaining.

You expect me to rubber-stamp a seal a of approval on that husband-wife team excrescence? No dice Philistines!
On the other hand Geena Davis is a great actor who really should have been given better roles. Love her in Beetlejuice.
It's entertaining on the first watch but pretty crap on a second viewing.
Amy Adams has been cast as Lois Lane in the new superman.
Machete is awesome. Is he the toughest ever film character?
What about Jake "The Muss" from Once Were Warriors? He looks like he'd eat your eye balls straight out of your face if it won him the fight.
Maximus from Gladiator? Although he could be a bit of a girl always banging on about his wife and kid.
Then there's Danny DeVito in any role he's ever played, not including Lethal Weapon.
Bud White from LA Confidential?
Marv from sin city.
