Yes, throw Interstellar in there as well. I think part of the ennui is that it is all old hat.
What you are also seeing is that talented writers and directors are now looking more and more at TV as a medium for constructing compelling stories. TV allows you to really delve into different characters. This is why in this time of apparent decline in Hollywood, we have enjoyed the Sopranos, The Wire, GOT, Mad Men, True Detective 1, etc.
But it is also important to frame it in the broader entertainment context where we are moving away from 1 or 2 dominant entertainment media. We all know about (or remember) when musicians would invest in making albums that carried a theme or story throughout. Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The Beatles, The Who, etc were the best at this. Nowadays, few artists invest in albums. It's singles, and the focus is on making money from concerts, endorsements, clothing lines, reality TV etc. Concurrently, we are seeing better storytelling coming into video games as that medium matures.
