Irrational Man, the new Woody Allen, is one of his good ones. Riffing on Crime and Punishment which is still one of my favourite books.

Watched Crimson Tide for the first time since I saw at in the cinema on release. Denzel Washington is so cool in it, although Gene Hackman's villainous turn doesn't really make much sense. Still a very good film though.

Also, looking forward to Kill Your Friends.

Finally saw Watchmen on a streaming site. Thought it was quite good and the ending possibly better than the graphic novel itself. Had awful issues with pacing though.

Anyone seen Compton?
Goodness. I've been working in a country with no cinema. The last one closed in 2009. People live on pirated DVDs/CDs now. And there is no broadband/4G, so no downloads. Managed to travel out to see Man from UNCLE the other day. Was decent but had the elements to be so much more. It needed a more delicate director, methinks. Guy Ritchie hasn't done it in 15 years.

Southpaw - 8/10, your typical boxer rising from the ashes story. One thing I find hilarious in boxing movies is how many open punches everyone takes without ever falling over 😆
Straight Outta Compton - 7/10 - Good watch, impressive casting, the young Ice Cube was uncanny.
Pixels - 7/10 - quite cool in 3D.
San Andreas - 7/10, mainly for the effects.

Haven't seen the fight yet, love a good boxing film but I was put off by Gyllenhall and the fact the film is supposed to be based on Eminem's life 😆

Regarding the open punches, you'd be surprised how many punches a boxer with a good chin can take without going down. Some of the stories boxing writes are much less realistic than a film script could ever get, like Vazquez winning vs Marquez over 12 rounds with a torn knee ligament, Hearns - Hagler producing one of the best boxing rounds and fights ever when the former broke his hand a minute into the fight or the Gatti - Ward trilogy which probably tops all of them.

If you're interested in boxing you should really watch the whole fight (and the second and third bout too).

Thanks for the info jones, that video is insane, can't say I've seen anything like it before. I'm not massively into boxing but would have thought taking that many shots to the head would almost certainly have knocked you down, I stand corrected.

There's also a fight where Danny Williams dislocated his shoulder and fought on with his arm hanging by his side. Managed to knock his opponent (can't remember who) out. Can't get on youtube on work to link it but have a look. Ridiculous.

Nightcrawler. Could be Gyllenhaal's best work since Donnie Darko, and he's no slouch. So much about this movie was great. The art direction and score really brought these situations to life, and kept me gripped to the screen, filled with tension. Jake portrays an utterly loathsome but intriguing character. The narrative about the evolution from news chasers to news makers really makes you stop and think about what is acceptable in terms of detachment from a story by the media. When should they inject themselves in an unraveling story versus being uninvolved reporters? What exactly is the divide between professional and objectionable behavior?

Along with Ex Machina, my favorite movie this year. Want to re-watch it already.

Good movie but his best work is definitely Brokeback Mountain.
