Zero Dark Thirty. Started with a promising, interesting and affecting first 20 minutes (well bare the first 2), then descended into slow, boring one woman vs the world fantasy. This film raised no questions, reflected no truths and failed to entertain. No idea why its had such good reviews. Chastain was fine but again no idea why people think she deserves and academy award.

Watched All The Presidents Men. Thoroughly enjoyed it, not sure how I missed it over the years. End of Watch was also pretty good.

i've seen it compared to a long episode of homeland, with chastain the danes role.. is that accurate?

Superficially its like that but its far less interesting than Homeland. There's no Brody to provide any conflict so they basically manufacture it in the cheapest way possible. All the men wont listen to her and high up CIA guys in Pakistan sit around with their feet up on the desk not giving a shit. Plus she's superwoman as opposed to Danes being a crazy person who people are wary of for logical reasons.

I don't know - in the film there's basically only one CIA agent who's depicted as anything less than a dedicated professional (the feet up guy).

The rest, including the torturer-turned-desk-jockey to whom she's apprenticed, might be wrong-headed (since only Chastain gets the mission from God to take down "UBL") but they're almost obscenely virtuous.

I agree though it's like watching the life of a saint the way Chastain is depicted. She's shown as a beautiful, fragile but strong, sexless, supremely self-sacrificing apostle of the USA and it's a bit vomitous to be honest.

Michael Arndt is doing the Episode VII screenplay apparently. Probably means the film will have a highly competent but dull plot trajectory like the animated features he's done.

A bit long, but as a early 40s father of a teenage daughter I found it very, very funny. If that's not you thought it may not appeal.

What about the feet up guys predecessor? He's depicted as a bit of a careerist.

And who was in the office where she kept writing the number on the window. That bit was pretty obnoxious too.

Ah well. I haven't been all that thrilled by previous Apatow films but this one struck a chord.

Just noticed Argo referred to above - loved that film too. I heard the Iranians are pissed though and are going to make their own version to set the record straight.

@qs True mate.

All I can say is that the film seemed to me to depict a CIA overwhelmingly full of good hard-working people. Take the Mark Strong 'and we are failing!' speech as the touchstone ... they're presented as taking their jobs as a sacred duty.

I'm sure they have a strong organisational culture - wonder if it's changed nearly as much as it should have since the early 60s when they were in cahoots with the Mafia and poisoning Castro's cigars. 🙂

I just rewatched Jeepers Creepers for the first time in years. Have to say I was surprised over how good it is. It's a terrific little horror flick. It's deeply disturbing, but that's what makes it interesting. What's most unsettling about it is that the director, Victor Salva, is a convicted paedophile who was sentenced to a few years in prison after molesting some of the kids during the filming of Clownhouse. In the film the Creeper is portrayed as this demon who hunts people. When he gets a scent of someone he likes he'll keep coming after them until they're dead, and it just so happens that he has a taste for young boys. The police and law enforcement agencies are shown as unable to stop him in his quest for new victims, contrary to real life where Salva was convicted and forced to pay for his sins. There are long, voyeuristic closeups of naked skin and shots of molested bodies (Long's character enters the Creeper's hideout in the beginning and finds an entire ossuary full of people; two of them are sewn together, another one has stitches across his torso from where the monster has removed vital organs) which reflect the nature of the predator. The whole film seems to be a way for Salva to put a face on the ugliness that is inside him.
