So Prometheus is just like Snow White & the Huntsman then? Nice effects, jumpy plot, poor characterisation, a lead you want to get decapitated and be done with?

I thought Iron Sky was entertaining too. I remember interviewing the guy who made it back in -08 though, and he had his heart set at making a much more serious film at that time. I think I would've liked that version better.

I think that sense of wanting to be serious about it stood to the film. Its a silly premise but the film itself never really treats it as one. I wouldn't have minded seeing it done completely straight either TBH, I reckon they could have done a great job with it. As long as they took out the black guy turned Aryan part, that was terrible. He was terrible throughout actually.

Watched Tinker Tailor again yesterday.

If anything, I enjoyed it even more than the first time around. Excellent direction and a great cast. Made me wonder what an American equivalent would look, and sound, like.

I also re-watched it not long ago, RtC, agree with you.

It's an excellent film.

In terms of the US, I'd love to see something like James Ellroy's American Tabloid adapted with a similar relatively minimal style and a great American cast.

I would kill to see a film adaptation of American Tabloid. Done properly of course.

Although, Tom Cruise would probably end up playing Kemper Boyd...

I just watched the trailer for Anna Karenina. It looks absolutely gorgeous. The production values are amazing. The dialogue, the music and the way they've seemingly forced a modern drama out of the script makes me cringe though. Whoever thought it was a great idea to let the same guy who directed The Soloist do Tolstoy deserves a smack in the mouth.

Just not one of those adaptations that should be even attempted. Adaptations in general don't work as the name suggests, almost always just bastardization.

Only really mind it, however, when they claim to be doing some kind of a faithful reinterpretation. Its doomed from the start.

Yeah, I have - quite an interesting film, though more of a gimmick flick than The Seventh Continent. I'm a Haneke fan, have seen most of his stuff, though I haven't caught Amour yet.

I re-watched Caché recently ... another excellent film. There are several shots in there that kill - the one used in the video against the door in the old childhood companion's tiny flat is amazing, as is the street shot from outside the apartment.

The one trouble I have with that flick, though, is that when I watch it I can hardly stop ogling the bourgeois couple's ridiculously nice Parisian apartment. 🙂

Anyway, this conversation belongs more in the Film Thread ... so I've taken it over there.

Yea, I did an analysis of Caché a while ago and I couldn't get over that table they had. I really think he wanted it to be legitimately tasteful but terribly lavish at the same time so by envying it, you literally get a bad taste in your mouth. Great production design throughout that entire film, and I love how so much of the interiors are done in master shots, like they are stills from magazine adds for all their fancy stuff.

Yes, well, it's typical Haneke to force the audience to assign itself an identity relative to the protagonists? Increases the emotional impact.

In Funny Games he makes the alignment with the killers explicit by breaking the fourth wall, perhaps in Caché the main character's lifestyle is intended to be so alluring that practically all audience members will be locked into the same "aspirational" mode that characterises that character's guilty covering up of the past.

@Gazza I thought for a film with horror elements and think-y elements it just wasn't either scary or thought-provoking. But don't mind me, I'm a bit biased.

It takes what could be an interesting premise if done right (which I won't give away, although it's revealed in the first few minutes) and just kinda bolts humdrum mediocrity onto it Whedon style. But go see it, if you like his stuff you might well enjoy it.

your criticism seems to fly in the face of most of the buzz surrounding the movie. i'll check it out soon.
