We don't have any idea what 'deal' Barcelona would offer us. Doesn't say anything about a straight swap.

They would be getting a player who suits their game and has another six years at the top on a decent wage while we would be getting a player past his prime on big wages who has one, maybe two years left in him.

They'd be getting a moderate centre back and we'd be getting a classy striker. Only way to judge the deal would be to know the terms.

Not really, we'd be shifting a first teamer for one of their has-beens. It's plain to me who is getting the raw deal there, irrespective of the cash that may change hands.

Villa will be sold either way this summer because he wants to go. We could easily sign him without giving Vermaelen away.

Might be best to get rid of Vermaelen while his stock, somehow, remains pretty high. He shouldn't be captain, shouldn't be automatic first choice and we could do with a better centre back coming in.

That's the problem right there - selling Vermaelen per se is not. But you just know we won't replace him with the top class CB we need. So we'll go in next year with Kos-Per as our starting duo, with maybe Djourou or someone bought on the cheap at his level to cover, and hope Miquel steps up.

Vermaelen hasn't been good, but I still wouldn't advocate selling an important member of our squad out knowing we won't replace adequately.

He's too panicky. Anyways, I very much doubt barca would be interested in him, and I also doubt we'll move for villa

I'd really like to know how this negotiation panned out. Barcelona don't care about this guy, unless he's carrying an injury we are unaware of. They're not playing him. I'm not sure how insistent they were on keeping him, but he would've been better off starting as our 9, much like Balotelli at Milan.

They'd take him alright. He'd look great for Barca where all his running forward would probably help rather than hinder them. You don't get caught on the break if you still have the ball.

However why would we want Villa? He's a hasbeen.

Don't really want Villa either. Would have been ok in Jan as a panic buy to get us 4th (imagine him going clean through on goal against Chelsea and Tottenham instead of Giroud 🙂 ) but he's definitely past his best and the only way is down at this point in his career.

Yep the time for Villa was January. Really think we'd be in a better state if we'd got a decent striker then, longterm he's not going to take us higher.

On a downhill slope or not, he's going to give us more in the next three years than Giroud will.
