A transition to someone more long term. Yes, a new manager at Man U needs to revamp the squad; van Gaal has a big pull in the world of football which I reckon will help in that regard, and he is used to buying top bracket players. Also, he knows what he wants to do on the pitch, and is therefore more likely to actually get the right players in.

Assuming they get Van Gaal, Man U will be right up there next season. I don't have any doubt about that.

They would have been up there anyway I reckon. They made a clear statement of intent by blowing £37 million on Mata. Fair enough, it was the wrong player, but it was pocket cash for them. They just signed the biggest shirt sponsor agreement in the history of the game and there is more broadcasting money arriving from the new television deal. In a summer where City and Chelsea will have to slow down to keep in line with fair play stipulations United will be able to splash more money than ever before.

They've got a fantastic attack but that's at most 4 positions sorted out of 11. They need to buy a new back four and central midfield. It's easy to slip from the top to outside the CL places, but I think it'll be a struggle for them to get back in.

They have underperformed this season but I don't think it's particularly unrepresentative of the true quality of their squad. It needs a lot of work.

They're going to have to sell Rooney and Vanp to start rebuilding a new team, those players have too big ego's and are still "under ferguson"

Would have to think Van Gaal has the experience to manage those personalities.

There's a bit too much work to be done on their squad in my opinion. They could paper over the cracks a little with just two or three top quality signings. The question is, will players of that calibure be available or will they have to settle for more of the likes of Mata and Felleini?

Van Gaal at United would be hilarious. They would play great football for a year and then implode as he inevitably gets into a fight with everyone at the club from RvP to the tea lady.

They'll get around 80 points if the summer goes well for them.

They still have their pick of domestic players. The talent at Southampton for instance or even spurs and Everton. I'm sure they can get the players needed to supplement a drive for top four if not the league.

There's a decent chance they'll go hard for Fabregas again and he'll turn them down again. That'd be funny.

Everyone's saying they'll be right up there with a few changes, but everyone said they'd be a shoo-in for top four this season.

Don't think they're guaranteed top four, it will depend on what sort of "aura" they can build up at the start of the season.

I reckon Van Gaal, or a manager of his standing, would probably be a bigger draw for Fabregas than Moyes.
Cesc's a bit of a football snob, he was never going to play for a journeyman manager.

I fully expect a manager of van Gaals stature to sort out most of their problems over the summer. The only hindrance as I see it with van Gaal is that he is occupied all through the WC; he may not have enough time to evaluate the squad and get all the transfers he wants done.

He won't get all the transfers he wants done I reckon, and given that United need to sort out personnel in midfield and in central defence that could amount to a big issue going into next season.

I am really looking forward to Van Gaal's press conferences as well. Many Dutch sayings and one liners will be literally translated and introduced into the English language, such as "Am I so smart or are you so stupid?" and "You should use your healthy farmer's mind."
