I can't see why people would endorse that, even if "everybody's doing it". If it was a minor thing, the sort that can just disappear without major influence on the game, perhaps (wouldn't justify it, but would excuse ignoring it). But that's not the case: we're talking about the game we're interested in, there's no issue with changing the rules, yet we support something the undermines the rules? can't see that.
Perhaps someone can say it's "within the spirit of the game", as winning is so important in defining said spirit, that "bending the rules" would actually be part of the defined envelope. So, if that makes sense at all, the rules are not clear cut, but something to challenge by definition (I'm only bringing this up as I think some have something like that thought in the back of their mind, when justifying diving, at least "when everyone does"). But I actually think this is BS: it does not sit with the spirit of the game when looked at reasonably. It is degenerating it (and when accepted, it's due to accepting the already degenerated form).
