They could pay him off whatever he stands to gain from the release clause. In any case, if he's as good as people say, surely other clubs would've paid the release clause when Andy Caroll is going for £35m. I am not convinced this was a case of 'Bayern or no-one', and if that's right the club had options they were not willing to take.
