Klaus is right, no way should Falcao be in on goal from there. He didn't sell a dummy to a defender, it was Busquets - who's slower than a glacier. Meanwhile Puyol and Pique were on the other end of the pitch.

Come on GM, the dummy is clear as day for you to see. As a midfielder, talking from experience at Sunday league level, especially when playing against a faster opponents, you tend to use angles to get close enough to challenge them. This is what Busquets was doing as Messi had just unexpectedly lost possession so the defenders were out of position. Wingers do this all the time and fullbacks are better adapted to dealing with this skill as they are generally faster and more nimble than CBs (eg Vermaelen) and DMs (eg Busquets).

It was a nice-ish initial bit of trickery but a lack of pace and consequently lack of pressure on Falcao were the main problems. Someone like Koscielny would have shut him down (if he hadn't fallen worse for the trick).

Possibly, but there is another option which Falcao may have used if the defender was quick. He could cut across him making it impossible for the defender to tackle him although this would reduce his chances of scoring as this manoeuvre would take him towards Puyol.

I don't blame Busquets for being left eating dust. It was a nice bit of awareness, no doubt, but should Falcao then be allowed to run 30 yards without any pressure? Don't think so.

There was nothing physically they could do to recover the situation as they were caught out of position. As you said Busquet's speed is laughable but Puyol did bust a gut trying to get there but he is no Koscielny/Gibbs. I would concede that my hatred of them makes me love the goal more than it deserves

Look at it dispassionately anyway ... they're going to concede the odd goal like that because of the way they set up.

They won the match 4-1 and they've won 15 of 16 in La Liga all season. So the way they set up, camped in the opposition half with their CBs loitering on the halfway line, isn't actually a problem. For them.

😆 I don't see it either. He just walks past Busquets and then he gets to run 40 yards without any kind of pressure on him. That's what never would have happened in Premier League, by the way. No one would have abandoned him out there like that. There's poor defending in England too but there's never a lack of pressure on either defenders or strikers.

Just finished reading this one. Interesting stuff. Nice to see that Liam Brady was involved in some of the underlying work.

I thought it was interesting that Barcelona spend around €10 million annually on their academy (€20 million if you include Barca B and the U19 team). They dwarf everyone else in this aspect. Arsenal and Bayern spend €3 million each while Ajax and Inter spend around €6M. Lens also spend €6 million which I found surprising. It might be down to some unusual circumstances in France though.
