Following players at other clubs and watching other teams are things you do just because you love football. I could watch Neymar and Ibrahimovic all day for example, and I try to catch teams like Dortmund and Real Madrid.
Except for when Arsenal is playing of course. Never miss a minute of that. That trumps everything else.

The big tournaments are mostly a televised affair anyway. Doubt fewer people will watch the games live in this format compared to the one where a single country/two countries is/are hosting it.

They'd be wise to put some thought into how they'll do during the group part of the competition though.

In what way does it kill the event? For about 99 percent of the viewers it is exactly the same - you watch it on tv.

They'll have to think about the group stages though. There is a major risk that teams will get an 'unfair' home advantage.

Not really surprised though. It's going to be a similar story in the world cup. It somehow escaped FIFA's attention that Brazil equals roughly half of the South American continent. The group games are spread all over the country and there's no way the infrastructure will be able to support all the traveling and accomodation even if we decide that the huge extra costs for the supporters isn't an issue. We're looking at a disaster.

Well, that is what I mean by UEFA having to be careful with the thinking behind the group stage. Either you make sure that no one gets home court advantage, or you could make sure everybody does. Ideally IMO, they would wait until the qualifiers and the group balloting thing is done and decide the hosting venues after that.

Say you get a group like this:

England
Sweden
Bulgaria
Russia

Those are 6 games. You could always make sure that those countries get 2 games each to be played in their country in the group phase.
What would be wrong with that?

I actually quite like that format!
You qualify - you get to host two group stage games.
I actually think you would get more individual spectators in that format. As it is now there are lots of people who buy tickets to all three group stage games that their country plays, and then a fair few of them also get tickets for a few of the knock out games. In the kind of format I suggested, then you are likely to get a lot more persons who only watch the one game live, but you'd still have packed stadiums.

The big International tournaments are much about different people from all over getting together to support their team. It creates a certain atmosphere not only inside the stadiums but also in the hosting cities.

If the tournament is spread all over Europe, so will the fans and the games will feel just like the qualifiers did.
