My guess is that many people don't feel like pony up the cash for flight tickets given the state of the Spanish economy. Especially not if they already attend the home games.

No that away culture has been like that for years, even when the Spanish economy was booming. It's not just Barcelona. You won't see Sevilla fans travelling in large numbers to Barcelona or Madrid either. I agree though the in the CL it's different.
