Today’s Cagliari-Roma match has been called off by local authorities due to public order concerns after the club invited fans to attend the closed doors game.

The decision was made deep into the night in an emergency meeting of the Cagliari Prefecture and local police.
It was to be played behind closed doors, as the stadium again failed security checks amid restructuring work.

However, Cagliari President Massimo Cellino released a statement on the club website inviting all supporters with season tickets to attend anyway, as he considered the stadium to be perfectly adequate to host a crowd.

The Cagliari-Roma match was supposed to be played behind closed doors because the new stadium Cagliari moved too was deemed not to be up to the right safety standards. Their first match had already been played behind closed doors.

THe Cagliari owner issued a statement, defying the decision, and inviting all fans with season tickets to show up, as he thought the stadium was safe. As a result, to avoid a riot, the local police postponed the match.

The Italian FA has just ruled that the postponement was the fault of the Cagliari owner, and therefore awarded the win to Roma by the score of 3-0.

Some stuff you just can't make up.
