A poor mans Kieran Gibbs tbh. Used to be classed as a very good potential but he hasn't followed that up in recent years. Just all round mediocre.

There is also theprospect of Holland team-mate Gregory van der Wiel arriving for £7million. Van der Wiel also has one year left on his contract at Ajax and the Dutch champions are anxious to cash in rather than lose him on a free next summer.

Van der Wiel hopes to join the Gunners, but Newcastle have tabled a £10m double bid for the Dutch right-back and Ajax midfielder Vernun Anita.

as well as the imminent arrival of Spain international Santiago Cazorla, in a £9million deal from Malaga, have impressed the captain.

Safe to say this one isn't happening, nothing whatsoever in this.

He was a player with massive potential in 2010. Absolutely should have moved on from Ajax after the World Cup, but Ajax treated him poorly and priced him out of a move to a proper club in a proper league. Has stagnated badly since then, but that's understandable.

I've no doubt Wenger would get him back on track, he has all the tools necessary to be a top fullback. Would love this to happen, Sagna and van der Wiel would be a great pair to pick from at right back. Especially if we could get him for a cheap fee due to his contract situation. Could be a bargain to be had. Also a very good friend of Robin's (if that counts for anything these days!).

We need another RB. Jenkinson's proximity to a regular starting spot is unnerving.
Not entirely sure about Van Der Viel but if he displaces Karl I wouldn't be unhappy.

Don't agree there.

I watched him a lot if 2009/10, and he's definitely got ability.

He's never been the greatest defender, that said, he was very solid at the 2010 World Cup, but at his best he's a very clever, technically skilled fullback. Very quick as well, and can run all day long.

Wenger would help him get his confidence back and get his development back on track. Still don't reckon this will happen though.

Marcelo was an absolute rubbish defender when he came to Real Madrid, and now he is arguably the best FB in the world.

I am with Ricky here. Watched Van Der Wiel quite a lot a few years back, and he has everything really to become a great FB. He is only 24, seems to be able to be had at a very reasonable price, and he is already a lot better than our back up RB. Having him here to see where he is at in 2 years time seems like a very, very good move on our part IMO.
