England have been lucky these past 20 minutes. Balotelli really has been beyond wasteful.

Brilliant first 20 minutes, then Italy took control. Italy should really be winning by now, and if it's still 0-0 by the time England sit back and counter with Theo then I actually think that they'll win this.

I can understand playing Balotelli as he knows the English defenders and he has played off the last man well but di Natale would have gobbled up those chances. I expect him on soon.

England started well. Looked very dangerous from low crosses, but then Italy took over. They finished the half with twice as many passes (299) as England, dominating possesion and should be ahead by at least a goal. Balotelli not sharp enough. He looked crap apart from his runs, and it showed in his finishing.

Hope the 2nd half is as good as the 1st. Just the goals are missing.

England need to get closer to Pirlo for sure. They have been lazy tracking back on him a couple of times and as a result Balotelli was a poor first touch away from a proper 1 v 1 with Hart, and that beautiful ball over the top for Cassanos head where a last ditch tackle saved them.

England on the other hand look very dangerous on the counter and their crosses for Rooney and Welbeck.

Think it has mostly to do with Di Natale's age. He's nearly 35. He can't play every third day. World-class striker but not a dependable tournament player. He will probably start in the semi if Italy get that far though.

The problem with ganging up on Pirlo is that Montolivo or De Rossi will simply assume his responsibility and hit those passes instead. The best thing England can do is to sit back and hope for quick counters. Balzaretti isn't great defensively as we've seen a few times in the tournament so far. As soon as England step up and try to mark the Italian midfielders they leave themselves exposed at the back though. They can't handle a high defensive line. Cassano has been fishing for that space behind Terry for 45 minutes now.
